9:15-10:15 a.m.: Why Attorneys Strike Out | Professionalism in Baseball and the Legal Profession

In the legal profession, courts have noted a lack of professionalism and civility among attorneys even though these traits are the mainstays of our profession and the foundations upon which lawyers practice law.  Learn the unwritten rules of professionalism in baseball and other sports and whether these same concepts of professionalism can apply in the legal profession.  We will discuss rules of professionalism, how to deal with difficult attorneys and how to improve professionalism in our daily practice of law.

11 a.m.-12 p.m.: Raising the Bar | Diversity & Inclusion in the Legal Industry

It is widely known that diversity and inclusion is lagging within the legal industry. Diverse attorneys are not well-represented in the profession, and further, are not equally given leadership roles and the authority to effect change. This panel will examine why diversity and inclusion in law is important, how to recognize and overcome obstacles to implementation while gaining buy-in from other partners, and how to evaluate effectiveness throughout the process. We will examine why it’s not only important to hire from a diverse background but to maintain a culture of diversity. Find ways to shift from talking about the problem to becoming an instrument of change within your firm or organization.

Panelists:
Diana Starks | Diversity & Inclusion Director | Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland
Meleah Kinlow | Associate | Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLC

Moderator:
John F. Hill | Litigation Practice Group Chair, Partner | Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLC
